Fibre Friday (29/6/18)

Hi Everyone
My Fibre Friday report today is very weak ! I’ve been concentrating on my crochet CAL (read back last week for more on the CAL) and have not had much time for anything else, Fibre related. I have done a little work on my Astrantia Socks, these socks were featured here a few weeks ago. I have a little more to knit on the second sock. My aim is to complete the socks in the next few days.

Back to the main story, the crochet CAL has been a challenge. I’ve coped ok with the actual pattern and the ability to read and understand what to follow. However, my ability to count and keep check on the stitches is proving almost impossible for me. Every single row seems to either grow or reduce by one or two stitches. I’m so careful with each row and almost all the rows are not quite correct the first time. I’m determined to get this one right, so I will carry on and hopefully my skills will improve. It’s about the ability to read my crochet - I can do this well with knitting but crochet seems to be difficult for me. I like the development of the shawl so far. The colours of the yarn are really pretty and work beautifully together.

I’m not totally into the stripes but I’ll go with it and hopefully the end design will work.

My next little project will be a design by Kate Davies called Polkagris Kerchief. This is a tiny striped scarf. I’m planning to use mustard and blue for my stripes. I need to find a suitable yarn - I think I may have an idea. If my plans works out, I should be ready to start in a few days. I’ll share my little project next time.

I’m off on a mini holiday next week so will be back on the 11/7/18.
Thanks for calling in. Have a great weekend.

Reworked Project #2

Hi Everyone
I’m on a mission to completely reorganise my Making stash. This is a lifelong ambition but every now and again, I have a determined effort to get things sorted and in some kind of order. This time, I’m deep into throwing out stuff as well as making decisions about where to focus my Making efforts. While searching in one of the boxes, I came across a necklace that was made in a short jewellery making workshop (several years ago). The necklace looks OK in my photo but it’s just not me and I would never wear it. It almost went into the bin but on further examination, the beads are quite pretty and I thought I’d like to to rework the piece into something I could wear. The job, deconstructing the necklace beads, took quite a while. However, it gave me an idea for a Making Workshop. It’s perfect for reworking a charity shop find or remaking something which doesn’t quite work for you in your own jewellery collection.

As I mentioned, I like the beads in my necklace but I don’t care for the wire stringing (for me). I do like the idea but it doesn’t suit my style at all. The brown colour shades are also not quite me. However, I’ve taken apart the necklace and it’s waiting for a new look. I’m thinking about adding different coloured beads to alter the colour palette. I’m not sure what I want to make yet. A bracelet is probably a better idea for me although, something is telling me I need a necklace  Not sure at this stage ?

The original workshop added some little heart shaped button beads to the kit which I didn’t include in my first design but I’ve added them to the mix. I’ve also saved the findings, which are in amazingly good condition. I’ve placed my beads in a little storage box. There are several spaces available for new bead/other additions. My plan is to do a bit of research and hopefully something will inspire me. I’ll keep you informed of any progress.

Thanks for calling in today.

Stitch Story News

Hi Everyone
I’m trying very hard to find some space in my day to complete a little hand embroidery for my Stitch Story: Miss Mitchell bag. This task is holding me back and I must do it. Look back to see and read lots about this project on the blog. This is a project that should have been completed by now. Looking back it was 8/5/18 when I had planned to complete the little hand embroidery task. However, such as life and other stuff has overtaken my plans (several times) !
My aim for today is to complete the embroidery (see my photo story) and make a final readjustment for all my patches. I’ll also make a decision about how I’m going to sew the patches in place. Each day, I will sew a patch in place.

I really want to finish my bag soon. It’s going to be used for some little yarn projects and I’ll enjoy taking my bag to Knit Group. I already have my next Stitch Story planned and can’t wait to get started. I’ve promised myself that I won’t start until the bag is finished.

Thanks for calling in today.

Kumihimo Kits

Hi Everyone
It’s our regular Making Workshop today and this time we are making our own Kumihimo Kits.  I have produced a recipe for the kits but Makers will choose their own threads, beads, findings and charms. Each kit will produce a personal, unique piece of jewellery. If you are unfamiliar with Kumihimo, it’s a Japanese form of braiding. Cords and ribbons are made by interlacing strands. Kumihimo is Japanese for "gathered threads". We will be using a little tool/ disc to organise our threads and interlace the strands.

The individual elements for the kits will be chosen and placed in organza bags ready for development. The idea is to design your own item of jewellery. The item could be either a bracelet or a necklace. There’s quite a bit of preparation when using beaded threads, so we will spend time today setting up the Kumihimo discs, ready for Making.
I’ll take some photos of the final kits to share design ideas.

Thanks for calling in today.

Reworked !

Hi Everyone
Just a very quick post today. I’m sharing a mini project from the last few days. This is a reworked bracelet (broken) which a friend asked me to rework for her.
The beads are very pretty and look great together as a minor statement piece. I took the bracelet apart and played  around with a few combinations before deciding on the final design.

The original bracelet had some antique brass elements to the threading so I picked up on the metal combination and added a simple chain using the same colour. It’s turned out OK and my friend seems pleased with her new necklace.

Thanks for calling in today.

Fibre Friday (22/6/18)

Hi Everyone
It’s Friday again ! - I say this every week and can’t quite understand where my week has gone ?
However, I’ve some exciting news on the fibre front. The crochet along (I did mention this last week - read back for background) has started and I’m underway. I was hugely enjoying the first 10 rows of the shawl and thought I’d done amazingly well, see my photo story at this point below. Then, after a few more rows, I noticed my little ‘bars’ in the centre of the pattern didn’t line up exactly. Initially, I quite liked the effect but having seen some other samples - all the centre bars seem to be lined up. I’m not an accomplished crocheter and always need lots of YouTube videos to get me through a pattern. Given my poor skills, I thought I was doing well. Having looked again, I think, I’d messed up with stitch counting. This is the single most difficult thing about crocheting for me. I seem to be continually confused when counting stitches at each end of a row - where to start and where to finish ! I’m usually fine with counting stitches within the row. As my shawl developed and more stitches were added, more stitch count issues emerged. I’d got to row 18 and my bars and stitch count just looked wrong ! The edges were not very neat and the centre bars looked like a meandering stream.

All these little mistakes happened on day 1, 20/6/18. The project to date has been a great learning experience. I’ve sorted out the stitch counting thing and I’m much more confident about the organisation of my work. I’ve pulled out the work several times so I’m familiar with the pattern and the specific stitches. I’ve managed to learn the 2 row pattern and I’m very particular about stitch counting after each row. So, generally - I think I’m OK.

There are lots of examples of finished ‘clue number 1’ on social media and these samples have helped me realise I’ve done a reasonable job. One  additional thing I’m thinking about is wether to include all my contrasting yarns in the project ? The shawl has a series of stripes in the pattern . I like the first few stripes. I have a few rows to go to get to the end of my ‘clue 1’ and  I think, I’m happy to leave out my 4th contrast colour. My other 3 yarns seem to merge well with the main yarn (as in my photo) and I think I’ll leave out the navy colour (4th yarn). I’ll report back next time. There will be many more issues for me re this project but I’m determined to get it right and I know my skills will improve. The next clue is published on 27/6/18.

Other fibre news, I’ve been working on the second sock of my latest Helen Stewart Sock Society pattern, the Astrantia sock. I’m well down the foot so hope to complete within the next few days. Pictures will follow next week. You can see images of my first Astrantia Sock on last Friday’s blog.

That’s about it for fibre stuff. I’ve been busy with life in general and my crochet CAL has taken up most of my fibre time this week.

Thanks for calling in today.
Have a great weekend. I’ll be back on Monday.

Kumihimo Revisited

Hi Everyone
I’m preparing for another Making Workshop session today. We are making Kumihimo bracelets/necklaces. We’ve made these things before but a few of our members have requested we make more. I’m hoping I can come up with a kit recipe which can be personalised on the day. My plan is to provide all the basics ie threading (various thicknesses and colours), a variety of beads , glue, findings and possibly small charms. The idea is to choose each element of the design and prepare for making. Most of our Makers have the Kumihimo discs and are familiar with the technique, however, I’ll be going over the detail as a reminder and will include a short ‘tips’ note in the kit. Here’s a look at the selection of Kumihimo style braiding we have produced in the past.

Hopefully, we will come up with some new and interesting designs when we meet next week. I’ll be developing a new design for myself and will share when I have it.

Thanks for calling in today.

New Project

Hi Everyone
I’m starting an exciting project this week. This one is new to me, although I’ve been thinking and talking about it for some time.

This is a very simple little weaving loom which will form the basis of a Making Workshop in September. In preparation, I will be experimenting over the next few months.
As usual, I’ve been looking on Pinterest for inspiration and have found a few ideas :

I  also have a few books about weaving and will spend some time reading as much as I can.
My next step is to try out something similar to my inspiration board above. I’ve been collecting some different yarns and leftover bits and pieces of fibre materials. I’ll simply start experimenting. Keep watching for my results.

Thanks for calling in today.

More Crochet Training

Hi Everyone
I’m still on the dish cloth making crusade. It’s more to do with following a crochet pattern rather than anything else, although as do need a few more dish cloths !  I didn’t have too much time yesterday but managed to make another dish cloth. This time, it’s the actual Waffle Stitch pattern. Unfortunately, I ran out of the pretty red yarn and only managed about half the size of the dish cloth (in the Waffle Stitch). However, I added a blue border in a contrasting blue yarn - so all is well.
I think, I’m OK with the Waffle Stitch and it’s been a good training session for the forthcoming crochet along (read back here for more on the crochet along project). I’m over excited about this project and hope I can keep my enthusiasm going until the end ! I’ll share my journey here on the blog. The project gets underway on the 20/6/18.

Thanks for calling in today.
I’ll be back tomorrow with a new Making project plan.
Bye for now.

Crochet Experiment

Hi Everyone
I’m sharing the results of  a little crochet experiment today. It’s an exciting Make - a new dishcloth ! I love having handmade dishcloths and am seriously low on my supply. I usually have 3 or 4 in use at any time. The cloths don’t last too long because I wash them in the washing machine, often and they tend to break down quite quickly. I do have a pattern (Waffle Cloth by Chip Flory) but I’ve gone way off the pattern after the first line. I was trying quite hard to keep to my stitch count across the rows but I’ve failed miserably ! For some reason, I miss stitches - usually in the beginning phase. This pattern has a lovely waffle texture, very pleasing to produce (when you get it right).

I’m going to make a few more cloths this week in an attempt to follow the pattern exactly. This is practice preparation for my upcoming crochet along project (mentioned on Friday). I’m quite excited about the new project but slightly apprehensive about my abilities. It’s something I need to conquer, so I’m determined to make a decent job of it.

I like the way my dishcloth turned out but will go for a true Waffle pattern next.

Thanks for calling in today.

Fibre Friday (15/6/18)

Hi Everyone
I have another low production week re my fibre projects. I’ve been knitting most evenings with a few projects but not much to show. I have  a new pair of socks to share, the Astrantia socks by Helen Stewart. This pattern is the third in her Sock Society for 2018.

These socks are great to knit. They have a little lace flower pattern going on in the leg, bobbles around the cuff with a German Short Row Heel. I’m well into the foot part of the first sock. I’m using WYS Signature 4 ply, not sure if the name of the colour but it’s a vibrant turquoise. I’m happy with my choice. I did consider dying some yarn for the job but failed to get it organised in time.

Last week, I talked about a new sweater project - the Bright Sweater by Junko Okamoto. Sadly, I’ve pulled out the whole thing and need to start again ! Although the pattern was going well, the sweater was much too small. I thought, I had gauge but I was way off ! After lots of re testing and using a few different needle options. I’m going with a couple of larger sized needles. I need to acquire one of the needles so I’m delayed in starting again. Hopefully, I’ll get started over the weekend.

My other fibre interest is a dye project (in preparation for a mystery crochet along) read back yesterday’s blog for more. I dyed the yarn this morning and it’s turned out as I planned, mostly.

This image was the yarn straight from the dye pan, still wet. As the yarn has dried it’s lightened, a little. Initially, I thought the orange/mustard colours didn’t quite work. However, all the colours find their way into the larger, main hank (far right). It’s not obvious from my photo but the brighter orange-like colour does feature in the larger hank and the combination is growing on me. The dark blue (far left) is a good semi solid and and I love the shade of blue. The second yarn from the left has been dyed with a grey/neutral in a broad stripe, again I really like this one. I’ve rewound the hanks and after drying the combination is lovely. The third from the left is another semi solid, in the bright orange colour. It’s slightly varied which gives it depth. The fourth from the left is a two tone darker grey and again, after drying - I love the effect. The large hank on the right is a combination of all the shades and colour tones. I’ve hand painted this 100gm hank in a random design. I particularly like the final effect. As with all the colours, they have lightened and blend well together. I’ve got high hopes for my shawl.

That’s about it for my fibre projects this week. Have a great weekend.
Thanks for calling in today, I’ll be back on Monday.

Dye Job

Hi Everyone
I’m really looking forward to today’s Making job. It’s the first time for quite some time that I’m dying up some yarn. I love to do this. This time, the finished coloured yarns are for a specific project. The project is a mystery crochet along, organised by Eden Cottage Yarns. They did offer yarn for preorder but I missed the chance to order (both opportunities). So, I decided I would dye my own. I’ve also joined the Facebook Group  (check it out here) supporting the project. I’m hoping members of the group can give me lots of support when I need it ! I am able to crochet all the stitches as individual techniques but add in a pattern and anything can happen !

The project calls for a 100gm and 4x 20gms hanks of yarn. I’ve split a second hank into 25gm hanks. My colours will be dark blue, mustard and greys for the smaller hanks and the 100gm hank will be a variegated combination of the same colours with speckles. That’s my initial plan. This may change as I develop my colours and paint the yarn. I do like to start with a plan (in all of my making projects) but I’m not restrained by it. I like to go with my instinct ! Wish me luck.

Thanks for calling in today.

The beginning of the end.

Hi Everyone
It’s finally here. The beginning of the end of my Stitch Story Project : Miss Mitchell. This project has been running for quite a few months now and it’s time to complete the actual bag, the end product of this project. You can read more about the project on the blog, simply search for Stitch Story.
This is the state of play, all my relevant patches are prepared and I’m going to take everything off the bag (the background fabric) and start again with their placement. In their current design, there is not room for all the patches and other embellishments.

I still need to embroider the back of the bag with my Once upon a time ..... phrase. This is quite an important part of the project, so I will take some time to get it right.  I’m sure, I will find that I need to prepare more stuff (yet to be identified) but at the moment, I think, I’m done with making patches. I also need to sew in the lining and make the handles, so plenty to do !

Im taking a week or so to complete the final stages of the project, I’ll share my progress as I go.

Thanks for calling in today.

Appliqué Greetings Cards

Hi Everyone
I’m sharing my three completed greetings cards today. Read back a few days to see the development of these samples. This card project forms the basis of a local Making Workshop taking place later today and have worked out well. Each card has taken the Appliqué technique as the main element for building the card.. I’ve used both freehand cutting and die cutting to develop the embellishments.
The right hand sample uses a sizzix die to cut the cake and the striped banner but the other two samples are simple freehand cut shapes. I did sketch out a little shape for guidance but the size of the card dictated how large the embellishment elements would be.

All fabric shapes have been given a layer or Bondaweb (a fusible iron-on material) this makes sewing the fabric shapes in place, much easier. The fused shapes stay where they need to be and allow embroidery to enhance the design rather than adhering the fabric. I’ve added buttons and beads in a limited way but paid attention to finishing details. I think a simple approach for this project is a good one. I like to add something to the back of a hand made card so have taken inspiration from colours/style to add a tiny point of interest on the back of each card.

Hopefully, my workshop Makers will, be inspired to make cards of their own.

Thanks for calling in today.

More Appliqué Patches

Hi Everyone
I’ve been developing another couple of appliqué patches over the last few days. Read back last week for more on this mini project. The appliqué idea is the last part of the Stitch Story Project. Hopefully, I will be able to get all the little ‘sub projects’ finished this week and share my completed project next week. You can find all the background to the Stitch Story Project on the blog.
My last appliqué patches are also to be used to make greetings cards for a forthcoming Making Workshop later this week.  I’ve tried a few different ideas for the appliqué part and am experimenting with how to add words for the actual greeting element. I’ve made three samples for the cards. The first one, I shared last week (you can check it out here). The next two are almost there.

The new samples are based on flower ideas. I’ve used Bondaweb (an iron on fusing fabric) to stabilise a printed cotton fabric square, cut out the flower shapes and ironed onto a plain backing patch. Parts of the petal/flower shapes have been machine stitched. I’ve also used hand embroidery and beads for elements of the right hand sample. Both samples have a machined border to finish the edges. The sample on the right will get a ink stamped message on the little cotton tape before machine stitching in place. I’m not sure what message ?  - possibly Hello ? The left hand sample has an embroidered ‘Thank You’. Each sample will be attached to a blank white card using double sided tape.

These samples would both allow for a quick batch style production for greetings cards, especially the left hand sample. The right hand sample could also use machine stitching for the embroidered parts which would make the assembly much quicker. The stamped tape message idea also gives lots of flexibility for making different types greetings cards. Both samples could also be embellished in different ways to make very special cards. Generally, the experiments have worked well.

Thanks for calling in today.

Fibre Friday (8/6/18)

Hi Everyone
Fibre Friday is a little thin on finished items today but I have made good progress on my latest Miss Mitchell Socks. Last week, I mentioned plans for a corrugated rib at the top of the sock. I needed to work a couple of versions to get the pattern and colours the way I liked them. Thankfully, I think, I’m there with the latest version.

The second sock is almost complete with only the heel to add. I had thought about knitting both socks at the same time but wanted to check out my written pattern instructions by using it to complete the second sock. All seems to be well with the pattern. The timing is perfect. My next sock project, the latest sock pattern in the Helen Stewart Sock Society series, has just been released. It’s called Astrantia. This time, the pattern is quite a plain sock with a few very pretty flower motifs  on the leg part of the sock. I’ve not identified any yarn for the socks yet. I will have a good look in my stash today but I’m considering dying some yarn for the job. I quite like the idea of a light, variegated green and I’m not sure I’ve anything like that in my stash.

My other knitting story for today is all about an old knit from two years ago. It’s a pattern by Erica Knight.

These images are not my version. I can dream ! My Positano has a very dodgy neckline. I need to undo the whole neck area and rework it. Hopefully, this should be a straightforward task. I’m prioritising this job this week, I’d like to start wearing the top.

I’ve also got a little bit of crochet news today. I’ve joined a mystery crochet-along ! I’ve been here before and it was not a huge success ! Long term visitors to the blog may remember my poor efforts with a  Christmas mystery crochet project ! Moving on ..... I’m not very confident I can make a good job of it. However, I’m keen to try and push myself.

Hopefully, by next Friday I will have my yarn and will be ready to go.

Thanks for calling in today. Have a great weekend. I'll be back on Monday.

Greetings Card

Hi Everyone
At last, I have my Happy Birthday card. The appliqué #3 Patch has been completed (read back on the blog for more on this project) and attached to a card blank. I still need to develop a little something for the reverse of the card. At the moment, I’m going for a few words (possibly - have a great day ?) on a similar style square patch. The reverse patch will be much smaller but use similar stitches/colours and follow a similar style.

I’ve added an iron on fabric (interlining) layer to the embroidered patch to give a little more stability as well as keep the threads in one place. As I mentioned a few days ago, I’ve attached the the patch to the card blank with double sided tape. I’ll finish the back mini patch later today and my appliqué #3 Project will be complete. My only issue is that the base fabric on my patch is a little creased. I have a very small quilting iron which will help me with this problem.
I had thought that appliqué #3 would be the end of the appliqué series. However, I’ve an idea for another appliqué patch. The new one will be a much quicker make (I hope). The appliqué #4 will use a machine stitch as well as some hand stitching and should be more of a batch style option for making greetings cards. I’ll share my results next week.

Thanks for calling in today. I’ll be back tomorrow with Fibre Friday.

More Appliqué #3

Hi Everyone
Appliqué #3 continues ! I did manage to complete most of the patch decoration yesterday. However, I decided the top Half Blanket Stitch needed to go before I could add the iron on backing. I wouldn’t be able to give the latch a clean cut around the edges as the base fabric would be visible or so would cut the stitches. So, that’s taken out. I will add the fusible backing to the whole patch and re do the complete border (all four sides) using the same Half Blanket stitch. I think this will give a pretty finish to the edges before sticking onto my card. Read back a few blogs to get the whole story of this appliqué patch.

I added the happy birthday sentiment as well as some little button streamers. The cake acquired a decorative embroidered band and some French Knots to simulate cake sprinkles. I also added a tiny metal heart bead, just after the you word (difficult to identify the shape in my photo).
Generally, I’m happy with the job so far. Hopefully, I can find a little time to complete my card today. I’m wondering what I can add to the back of the card as extra decoration ? I’ll come up with something as I go about my day and let you know tomorrow.

Thanks for calling in today.

Appliqué #3

Hi Everyone
Yesterday proved to be a difficult day for getting things done !  I had lots of chores to complete and not much time for my appliqué #3 Project, consequently there’s not much to show for my efforts.

I did manage to add a little bit of embroidery to my cake (see bottom right photo). I’ve added some outline stitching to the cake and started to embellish the top banner. I’ve also done a little thinking about what Id like to add to my patch - see my list on the left hand box in my picture. I’ve probably got too many extra bits and pieces but I’ll keep going with the embroidery and decide what to leave out when I’m finished. I think, this patch needs to be less busy and allow the Happy Birthday message to be the stand out thing.
I mentioned yesterday, my concerns re the edge finishing and have (hopefully) organised the patch to make sure I can nearly finish the piece. I have drawn a pencil line (just visible on the bottom right photo) to show where the final cut will be. I’m planning to fuse the back with iron on fabric which will give me a sealed edge. I’m probably going to continue the simple binding stitch, currently at the top of the banner, around all edges.
Let’s hope I can make more progress today.

Thanks for calling in.

Appliqué Work Continues

Hi Everyone
I’m still working on the appliqué stuff for my Stitched Story Project again this week. Read back on the block if you would like to read more about about this project. The piece from Friday’s blog is finished and I’m pleased with the results.

I’ve added some pretty ribbon to the bottom, mainly as my embroidery work was far too close to the edge for any other solution ! However, it seems to have been a good opportunity to make a feature of the red hearts and I think it works well with the other features on the patch.

I’m now, underway with #3 appliqué patch. This one will be a sample for a forthcoming workshop and will turn into a greetings card. The images are perfect for a birthday card. I’m not sure how this one will work yet ? I’ll spend some time sketching out a few ideas and go with it. At the moment I’m using a couple of simple shapes from last weeks shape cutting experiments.

As with the previous appliqué patch, I’ve used bondaweb fabric to stick the die cut fabric pieces to the backing material. My initial thought is to embroider a large Happy Birthday across the patch and decorate the cake with stitches and beads. I’d also like to add to the banner at the top, not sure how yet ? Hopefully, inspiration will take over.
My main aim is to consider the edge on the one. Previous examples have made me realise how much space I need around any embroidery motif.  I want to adhere the completed patch to a paper card, so no room for making heavy backing layers to hide fraying edges ! My plan, at the moment, is to back the completed piece with iron on facing fabric to seal the edges and stick the patch onto my prepared card with double sided tape.
I’ll be back tomorrow, hopefully with my card completed and any tips to share.

Thanks for calling in today.

Fibre Friday (1/6/18)

Hi Everyone
It’s Friday again and an update on my fibre news for this week. I’ve added a new sweater to my knitting projects. I started a few days ago with the Bright Sweater by Junko Okamoto. I’m using Cascade 220 (been in my stash for sometime !) and it’s turning out rather nice. The presentation style of Junko Okamoto is interesting and rather daunting at the same time. However, I’ve spoken to a friend with experience of knitting this sweater and she has advised to just go with it. So, I’m simply following the pattern, as written. I got gauge with a slightly larger needle size then suggested and will check the detailed measurements given for each section and alter accordingly. So far, it’s going well. I’m really enjoying the lovely textured yolk that’s developing.

My other knitting this week is my new Miss Mitchell Socks, this will be a variation on the usual (very plain) toe up with an afterthought heel and added cuff. The cuff will be a corrugated rib using a plain purple yarn for contrast with contrast heels. This yarn is King Cole ZigZag in Emberglow colourway. The stripes are lovely with lots of vibrant colours, just my sort of sock. My choice for the heels etc is Triskelion Sock Yarn, Ellen Sock in Old Mogul colourway. You can just see the purple in my little photo story (bottom right). I’m well on the way to completing the plain part part of the first sock and am looking forward to developing the corrugated rib - perhaps today.

That’s it for fibre stuff this week. However, I did mention, yesterday, that I would share my appliqué #2 progress today. It’s not quite finished but you get the idea.

Hope you have a lovely weekend. Thanks for calling in today.
