It’s our regular Making Workshop today and this time we are making our own Kumihimo Kits. I have produced a recipe for the kits but Makers will choose their own threads, beads, findings and charms. Each kit will produce a personal, unique piece of jewellery. If you are unfamiliar with Kumihimo, it’s a Japanese form of braiding. Cords and ribbons are made by interlacing strands. Kumihimo is Japanese for "gathered threads". We will be using a little tool/ disc to organise our threads and interlace the strands.
The individual elements for the kits will be chosen and placed in organza bags ready for development. The idea is to design your own item of jewellery. The item could be either a bracelet or a necklace. There’s quite a bit of preparation when using beaded threads, so we will spend time today setting up the Kumihimo discs, ready for Making.
I’ll take some photos of the final kits to share design ideas.
Thanks for calling in today.
